Synopsis
September 2007, Trieste. Fred, a seventeen-year-old Swedish girl, has just moved to the city with her father. She enrols at the local technical high school — and discovers she is the only girl in an entirely male class. Three inseparable friends — Antero, Pasini, and Mitis — are immediately drawn to her, each in his own way. Over the course of one school year, the four of them learn something about desire, loyalty, and what it costs to belong.

Director’s statement
Laura Samani transposes the action of the 1910 novel to 2007, when she herself was a teenager, refreshing the relationships between girls and boys while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original text. A Year of School is a film about bygone youth, human relationships without social media, camaraderie and first love, at once serious and joyful, imbued with a gentle nostalgia. None of the four lead actors had any previous film experience: some were spotted in bars in Trieste, others in the corridors of a high school.
